The new European Union “Battery Directive” 2006/66/EC on Batteries and Accumulators and Waste Batteries and Accumulators became effective on 26 September 2006. It officially repeals the 1991 Battery Directive 91/157/EC and gives European Member States until 26 September 2008 for the transposition.
]_5qME#N The primary objective of the new Battery Directive is to minimise the negative impact of batteries and accumulators and waste batteries and accumulators on the environment and to promote a better quality of life through a cleaner environment without any significant impact within the Community. Member States shall ensure that manufacturers design appliances in such a way that waste batteries and accumulators can be readily removed. Appliances into which batteries and accumulators are incorporated shall be accompanied by instructions showing how they can be removed safely and, where appropriate, informing the end-user of the type of the incorporated batteries and accumulators.
